It's only a matter of words or even a simple smile that turn strangers into what I would term as 'acknowledged people'. We see people walking by, driving in the next car, riding in the same train, walking in and out of the college.
Most of the time, they are just passer-bys to us that we don't pay much attention though we do notice their presence. How much weight do one put on their roles in our lives?
Would we lend a hand to strangers if they ever need it?
In movies and dramas, they have no problem depicting the kindness people have. However, even so by standers would tend to think "Isn't he afraid that he will be cheated?" Common fear. Undeniable, I agree, that in the society today the percentage of a person being cheated when lending help to strangers is scarily high. It's not ridiculous to say society today are so unpredictable and more often than not, act in accordance of their self-importance. Who are we to stop them? This leads to people avoiding them, albeit the wrong ones.
But I know of a tale of a man who is genuinely kind. He is an average man, not married, working and living in the busy city of Kuala Lumpur. One late rainy night, he was driving back from work and he came across a motorcyclist who is on the floor, knocked down by a hit-and-run car and well, the driver ran, leaving him helpless and injured. He stopped and helped the motorcyclist to the nearest clinic, even paying for the consultation.
What would you decipher if you were standing in the man's position? That the motorcyclist might one of the bandits who lured you to stop and help him when his members come and attack you?
This same man, one day, encounter a girl who is homeless. I quite forgot how he encounter her, but he took her back to his girlfriend's apartment and let her stay there for the night. The man's girlfriend took the girl in and let her sleep in the living room. The next day, he pays her a sum of money so that she can return to wherever she comes from.
You actually just wondered if the girl ever did harm the girlfriend or steal anything from the house didn't you?
The fact is the motorcyclist is not a bandit but genuinely someone who is hurt and the girl is not a cheater but a real homeless girl. How many of us would actually do that today? Right now? Would you open the door to let a homeless person stay for even just one night? A man once offered me a ride on his motorcycle under a really heavy rain with thunder when I was running from the bus stop back to my home. I said no. It's not because I don't trust him but because I'm already very near home. Assuming I still have a stretch of road ahead of me, I would have accepted the offer.
I always have faith in people that there's this good side to them, the real side, coming from a person who actually got robbed before. Humanity is not going down just yet, as long as you believe it doesn't. Don't be ignorant. Don't be blind, dumb and deaf. Because when you do, others will. When you need help, they can't see you, they can't hear you, they won't talk to you. That's how it works.
This great man in the tale, I'm proud to have him as my father =)
The girlfriend? My mom lah! Hahaha XD
