Initially I bought it for a try out, where if I don't like it I can return it for a buy back price. But now that I actually like the book, I am keeping it =)
It's written by a western author, no doubt, but the author did an excellent job in describing every detail of the lives in Edo period and it's downfall. The details of the women's status and lives, each and every thing is nicely embedded in the book. It is a fictional story but it's elements of history is not light which is to my taste.
For the first time in reading novels, I actually don't know what to expect out of the ending of this book. Normally when I read a novel, there is an ideal ending that I want, or expect an ending to be as such. However, when I read this book, I am afraid of reaching the end because I don't want to surprise myself with an outrageous ending. Somehow, it ended not-so-suprising after all, though there's still this part which changes about the male character that I don't quite like.
I have to agree with the author's difficulty in developing a love story in an era where love does not exist, how difficult it is to lay down the whole story. Still, she did. Bravo!
To those who have no interest in Japanese history, it's a boring book.
To them who does, it's a recommended read.
Jaana!
